According to the US Geological Survey, the most aroused earthquakes in the world have occurred in Chile, Alaska, Sumatra, Russia, and Ecuador since 1900. The ranking of the top 10 earthquakes by the U.S. Geological Survey is formed on magnitude according to the Richter scale. Earthquakes with lower magnitudes infrequently cause more serious causes and more death tolls than higher earthquakes.
The misfortune risk during an earthquake is the shaking. Structures that are not earthquake-proof can crumble. If the office building is not flexible, it is more possible to fall. Example is the earthquake in Haiti where most buildings were rised of concrete block. Earthquakes send waves through below the earth’s surface and transport at aloft speeds by dirt or sand but delayed down by bedrock. In San Francisco, most buildings collapsed in the Loma Prieta trembler because some were built on landfill resulting from the disposal of debris from the 1906 earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the top 10 deadliest earthquakes since 1900 are as follows:
10 Location: Izmit, Turkey Magnitude: 7.8 Date: august 17th,1999 Casualties: The death toll has risen over 15,000 and the injured list up to 40,000 cost of repairs: $10 billion A major earthquake with its epicenter near Izmit, Turkey struck at 3am local time (8pm EST Monday) near western Turkey’s largest cities, only 55 miles from Istanbul and 270 miles from Ankara. The U. S. Geological Survey is estimating the earthquake to be 7.8 Ms, which is classified as a major earthquake and one that causes a lot of cause, especially in highly populated areas
9 Location: Mexico City Magnitude: 8.1 Date: September 20th, 1985 Casualties: 40.000 dead Cost of repairs: $10 bilion Felt by almost TWENTY million people, this destructive earthquake injured nearly 30,000 people and left more than 100,000 people homeless. Severe damage was caused in parts of Mexico City, as well as several central Mexico states. In Mexico City, 412 buildings collapsed and another 3,124 were seriously damaged. A large percentage of the buildings that were damaged in Mexico City were between 8 and 18 stories high, indicating resonance effects due to the soft soils under the city
8 Location: Tokyo, Japan Magnitude: 8.3 Date: September 1st, 1923 Casualties: over 140.000 dead The 1923 earthquake was one of Japan’s worst natural disasters. The ground shook for five minutes as the Sagami Bay Fault ruptured. Thousands of buildings collapsed and a tsunami measuring 36 feet (11 meters) struck the coast. Most destructive of all were the resulting fires. A massive firestorm swept through Tokyo, destroying two thirds of the city’s remaining buildings and burning thousands.
7 Location: Assam & Tibet Magnitude: 8.6 Date: August 15, 1950 Casualties: 780 people killed in Tibet and 536 people dead in Assam cost of repairs: $10 bilion Buildings suffered extensive cause and landslides occurred in eastern Tibet. Areas of Assam in India experienced landslides and a natural dam broke, which created a 23-foot high wave.
6 Location: Northern Sumatra Magnitude: 8.6 Date: March 28, 2005 Casualties: 1000 people killed, 300 injured in Nias; 100 people killed in Simeulue; 200 people killed in Kepulauan, Banyak; 3 people killed, 40 injured. At least 10 people were killed during evacuation of the coast of Sri Lanka Surrounding islands in Sumatra suffered losses and a 10-foot tsunami caused flooding in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Maldives.
5 Location: Rat Islands Alaska Magnitude: 8.7 Date: February 4, 1965 Casualties: 40.000 dead Cost of repairs: estimated $10.000 Because the areas affected by this earthquake were sparsely populated, there was little cause and no deaths. A 30-foot tsunami affected the nearby islands in the Aleutian chain.
4 Location: Coast of Chile Magnitude: 8.8 Date: February 27, 2010 Casualties: 708 dead The epicenter was off the coast of Chile near Concepcion which is south of Santiago. Other areas affected were Maule and Bio Bio. A tsunami shove the Island of Juan Fernandez but never materialized in the rest of the Pacific.
3 Location: West Coast Northern Sumatra Magnitude: 9.1 Date: December 26, 2004 Casualties: 227,898 dead, missing 1.7milion This earthquake is best known for the giant tsunami that raced across the Indian Ocean. This tsunami holds the record for causing the highest number of deaths and the most destruction.
2 Location: Anchorage, Alaska Magnitude: 9.1 Date: march 28th, 1964 Casualties: 131 dead Cost of repairs: $500 million Anchorage suffered the most repairs as well as alternative cities together with Kodiak, Seward and Valdez. The tsunami generated by the trembler influenced the west seashore of Canada and the U.S. and Hawaii. The earthquake and tsunami resulted in 113 deaths from the tsunami and fifteen from the earthquake
1 Location: Soutern Chile Magnitude: 9.5 Date: may 22, 1960 Casualties: 32.290 dead Cost of Repairs: $500 milion Most serious repairs occurred in the Valdivia and Puerto Montt areas A large tsunami widespread opposite the Pacific Ocean. It caused 61 deaths, $75 million repairs in Hawaii; 138 deaths and $50 million repairs in Japan; 32 passed and blank in the Philippines; and $500,000 repairs to the west seashore of the United States.
