Fascinating photos. Thinking back to some of them makes me feel a bit on the more mature side.
Really amazing and historic Photos…
really a wounderful collectn of historic memories
Great historic Photos worth seeing
my sentiments exactly. these are very cool photos and they are most definately worth seeing. they are so interesting! i dont think the titanic is a photo, however. it’s completely and totally pitch black down there!!!!
When it is night time, how do you see things in your house?
Wow… to the people saying the Titanic photo is fake you apparently have no idea of the actual capabilities of underwater cameras. I am a underwater photographer and in the dead of night I was able to catch a photo of a sea turtle just like it was day. It’s called high power beams in a submersible not a painting or photo shopped. Just raising awareness that yes indeed there are abilities of cameras to go into the dead of night and deep water and take photographs as well as video. Might want to watch more National geographic and discovery channel.
it’s fake… which means it’s not real
Did you not read what he just said?
Trust me, you shine a lot of light and you use low light film with a low light lens. Allow the camera to get as much light in as possible and you can get that image. That’s probably why that other sub is positioned where it is, to add light.
I don’t think it’s meant that it’s impossible to get photos like this, it’s rather that this particular image is actually a painting of the Titanic, done by a man named Ken Marschall.
even if it a painting like some people below are saying. they DID say they didnt say this is a real titanic picture because its completely dark down there. so that is not saying what you are saying. just sayin.
i meant think* not say. blah.
I would believe you, BUT I have seen that PAINTING in a museum.
Even with a minimal amount of light, if the object in view is stationary, you can gather a digital image over time. That is how might vision goggles work.
It is called Image Processing. I used to do it professionally for US Government Agencies. You could take a picture in the dark, and using a mathematical filter, it will alter the color values of the pixels such that you can see all the features of the object.
Yes, you can get photos like this with long exposures.
But that far down, there is no light at all reaching the sea bed, so the longest exposure in the world won’t help. And even if there WAS light, a long exposure would have left that submarine as a blur, and the lights on it would be blown out highlights.
In short, the Titanic picture is a painting, not a photograph.
Nice collection! But I’d like the Titanic photos to be situated together.
That black and white picture of Titanic leaving the docks is not actually her. It is her (near identical) sister ship the Olympic and the shot of her shipwrecked at the bottom of the North Sea is mostly done with a combination of computer modelling, sonar and pictures pieced together.
No, the underwater picture was taken by another mini submarine that was with the other one, it was just further away, so it could get all of that. It was also using very high quality camera equipment.
Sharon that’s the funniest thing I read all year. Clearly you have given this answer a lot of thought. I’m sure there is a reason why, at 3300m below sea level, the titanic is lit like up as if it were midday in the sahara? Must have used a really big flash. Perhaps you could use your submersible, diving and photographic knowledge to explain how the sea is so clear!? I mean I dive and below about 30m I can’t see anything beyond a few metres. Must be because it is so cold. Oh dear I am laughing again, thanks for making my day! (PS you weren’t serious I hope :) )
Kevin, you seem like a nice guy…
I would suggest you look up Low Light Under Water Camera Equipment and see the capabilities instead of simply putting someone down because of your own ignorance.
Oh man, the both of you are great. And that giant smiley face is a beautiful touch of elegance, dare I say, perfect? I laughed myself to tears
it’t not a pic taken by an underwater submarine. I don’t even know why you would say that i’m almost positive you are assuming this. It is a painting by Ken Marschall. Don’t state things as fact which you are assuming. Even if you think it’s true, you are still lying.
Look up the painting by Ken Marschall and compare it to the PHOTO here. They are similar but not the same. The painting was clearly based off this photograph
This is a really awesome site. I wish Einstein’s diploma was in English and I wish there was a little more info about each pic. But definitely worth bookmarking and sharing. Hope to see more soon.
From what I know of the German grading system, Albert Einstein Failed everything on that diploma except for French. 6′s and 5′s are pretty much failing and 4′s are maybe the equivalent of an American D or so. 3 is average unless i has changed since then. His best grade looks like it was in French (but its difficult to see clearly) and he failed all his math and science courses. That’s really kind of funny. He did better in French, geography, and art than he did in physics, algebra, geometry and chemistry.
You’re wrong. This is no german diploma, it’s a swiss one. Therefore, the best grade to achieve is the six, the worst is 1. It’s just “the other way round” and Einstein did pretty well.
Salat
You have the grading system reversed. 6 is the highest, and 1 the lowest grade

Einsteins diploma states “Kanton Aargau” which is a part of Switzerland. Swiss grades go backwards…6 is the best grade, 1 the worst. So, great grades for him.
That is really cool info. Thanks!
Or maybe you got it backwards and french is his worst subject. It’d make a lot more sense.
“I wish Einsteins diploma was in English” lol I have to laugh at this comment sorry.
I think the Bush photo was the second time they told him.
Oh John Gen. Way to muck up a lovely set of historical photos by your passive-aggressive political comment about President Bush. Boring.
hmm.. to put this simply, Get Bent! The guy has a point. And honestly, The Bush photo doesn’t even belong anywhere in this collection. There is nothing rare or interesting about it, since it’s been seen a thousand times over.
Great collection! Do you have more?
Get bent yourself. Take your politics elsewhere.
How is passive aggressive? and how is it a political comment? It’s simply a statement of fact.
Exactly what I thought when first seeing that photo.. And OF COURSE he’d just so happen to be reading to children at the time.
ease up there, lisa. don’t be so free in suggesting that he was actually “reading…”
umm ok bush read everyday. he would have competitions with his friends to see who could finish first. don’t even try to make it out like he didn’t read.
Do you mean to suggest that a man who reads to children could possibly have been privy to the 9/11 attacks?
Look at the way that President Bush is holding his finger in a number one type “signal”????
Also, I think that it is very peculiar that there are “flash” cards in the background…???
Conspiracy written all over this one. ;)
The Bin Laden family used to be so Brady Bunch cool!!! What happened???
hahaa i love the brady bunch comment i totally agree.
Fundamentalism. It ruins every decent society.
The picture of the Titanic underwater is not a photograph.
my thoughts exactly.
Yeah no kidding, seeing there has only been what 1 or 2 submersible’s ever down there and it’s pitch black!?
I think I recognize the underwater Titanic photo from National Geographic’s 1985 article on finding the Titanic. I know they published some underwater photos from the Titanic in the December 1985 issue, and you could probably find archives on their website. The point being, in 1985 they didn’t have capabilities to digitally alter photos, so those are the real deal.
Did a little more looking into it–yes, I’m a nerd with free time–I think that whoever called it a composite photo was probably the most accurate. I think it’s compiled using photos from that 1985 discovery, which is why it looked so familiar, but they did a bunch of composites for the 100 yr. anniversary. So whether you consider a composite/edited photo to be a photograph is probably somewhat a matter of opinion.
i agree. nowadays, what makes a photo a photo
the titanic photo is a painting by Ken Marshall. He’s known for his realistic paintings of the Titanic. Not that I knew this, I just did 3 minutes of research on the internet where I already am. I wonder why the authenticity of this was such a debate.
“reading makes a country great” behind ol george hahahah
The one titled ‘Principles’ made me speechless.
I agree, principles stopped me in my tracks and gave me pause. Some pictures are worth 1000 words, that one is worth a lot more.
The picture titled Principles is also photoshopped
Not Photoshopped, staged. This picture was part of Large Magazines “For People Who Think Bigger than they are” Ad campaign.
Actually the picture titled “principles” is a still from the TV show ER.
So beautiful,tx for share…
Oh dear, Erik wishes the Titanic photos were together. Re-do.
I hate to be “that guy,” but at least one of these (the one called Principles) is not a real photograph and many of these are extremely well-known photos (the Berlin Wall and the one of President Bush, for instance).
Good work, the compilation, as heterogeneous as it is by design. I would like a clarification on James’ comment on the ‘principles’ photo. Is it really ‘not’ a photograph? Could someone elaborate why not?
It is actually a photograph, just not of a scene from reality. It was an ad campaign.
I’d be interested to know which computer that is that they’re calling the “first”, given that there’s some contention about that fact.
amazing set, but one of them stood out against all my harmful thoughts. Principles. I hope we learn.
Great pics! The other day i was talking to my fiance wondering what history is part of our generation (1986) this definitely answers the question. Thanks for sharing these great photographs
amazing photos,really like it!!!
Многу интересни фотографии! Very interesting fotos!
The Picture of “John Lennon shortly before his death” should have included a mention of the fact that the other person in the photograph is the guy who killed him.
Albums of the past that served as memories.
The title “Albert Einstein” is somewhat misleading as it implies that he is the only important figure in that picture. No mention of Schroedinger, Planck, etc. I’m sure he would be upset to learn that his colleagues did not warrant a mention.
Mcdonalds looked funny back then
coca-cola bottles are shrinking through time.. lol.. but i’d love the fact that Pope John Paul was a very nice man.. very inspiring! be nice to enemy..
I love all the photos but my favorite is Principles
Wait a second… Isn’t that Mark David Chapman with John Lennon?
yeah, it’s weird they didn’t mention that.
Yes, yes it is. And like someone else said, that would’ve been something good to mention in the caption to the photo.
What a very heart warming collections of those meaningful photos. I can see bush’s real reaction and I was amazed to see the 1899 coca cola bottle. Great catch! Two thumbs up!
Best thing ive ever stumbled on.
“reading make a country Great” !
Any rookie photograph will see the photoshoping of it!
What was written on the chalkboard behind his head?
How many kids/teachers write like this on a chalkboard (just to the whole left by the infatuated head)
If you will notice behind the President’s head the sign “reading makes a country Great”, is just that, a sign. Look close and you can see the mini (slender) chalkboard. I am amazed that everyone see’s conspiracy and that so many are blinded by politics and hate. On a side note, great collection of pictures!
The cleric with Hitler is definitely NOT Pius XII. It does not even look like him. The picture is of a diplomatic reception as there are many other ambassadors pictured in the background, and Pius XII was never and ambassador or nuncio to Nazi Germany
Most if them are very rare, nice and interesting.
We need more photos of celebrities when they were young! Like, the KING.
Thanks.
Very interestin pictures. Note that the Titanic under water is a painting.
Could someone explain to me what the picture ‘Principles’ means? I didn’t quite get it!
principles – the suggestion is that a group of people who all presumably took the Hippocratic oath are choosing to help someone who, according to his robe and the symbols that adorn it, would not appreciate their help or their existence simply because of their skin color.
Of course, to understand the implied statement, one would have to make a ton of assumptions about the details included in the picture.
The guy on the table is a Ku Klux Klan member.
I love those photos
Einstein’s diploma is one of the most interesting pictures here, I thought. Also ‘John Lennon moments shortly before his death’.
Thanks for the read up about those and more to the other people who’ve also commented here!
Amazing
These photos definately add a piece to the life picture of some of these histroic stories we have heard.
Pretty sure Ray Crock founded McDonalds. There is a plack detailing the history inside the first door at every McDonalds in the world Lawl
Ray Kroc, according to his own story, was a milk shake blender salesman. His best customer was a burger stand owned by the McDonald brothers.
He saw that people were waiting in long lines to get burgers that all were made exactly the same, every time. It was a hit.
Ray Kroc bought the burger stand, the McDonald name, and franchised his way to a fortune.
In his book, “The Bin Ladens”, Steve Coll addresses the alleged photo of a young Osama with his family. Coll interviewed several of the bin Ladens that are in the photo, and they all say that it’s not Osama in the photo. The picture was taken during a family trip to Sweden, which Osama did not go on.
Although I wasn’t around for many of these events. I still find them beautiful, or awwww striking….but what really hits home is the last photo of Bush’s face on 9/11. Maybe that because that is MY generations Titanic/war news …whatever you wanna call it.
I’m glad old photo’s like this exist. It’s a nice look back in history. Thanks!
Great Pictures For Great Minds. I Love These. Its a pity these Cannot be shared to social sites for Now but, THANK YOU for bringing these to Us. Lets not forget our Good Beginning in life.
I’m shocked at the picture of Brazil. I mean…you’ve got to start somewhere but that’s incredible!
very beautiful…
Well, I enjoyed all the pics, real or projected somehow, they still intrigued me. But “Principles” I thought was the best candid shot and the one woman’s eyes say it all. Just imagine the concept of what they are doing to whom…!
I don’t know why the photo with Che and Castro is in here. There are plenty of photos of them together seeing how they were good friends and also headed the Cuban revolution.
Wow.. These truly are incredible.
This is great except for the miscaption under Bushes photo..He already knew all about 9/11 before this man entered the room..Mainly because he was one of the puppets behind it.
These are great photos, but not rare by any means..
excellent
Wow– amazing photos. The one that really stood out to me was Pius and Hitler… also the one about the Berlin Wall. Someday I’d like to be able to capture pictures like these for the world to see.
The picture with the black nurses, and klansmen is fake. But the rest are great!
now it’s not rare anymore
wow!!! this is the best one i’ve seen so far on stumbleupon.com :)
I wanted to believe this… PAINTING …
I love the PIC its cool and amazing.
Saw some very rare photos ! thank you for sharing this with us
wowoowooo thinking a LOT!
Hmmm really these are some of the amazing rare images i have seen, and Mr. Einsteins diploma is also awesome.
Great Pictures !!
the pictures are indeed very intriguing.
The camera was/is an incredible invention. :) Nice collection.
yah i accept this rare colection photos..
Realy amazing, historic, but if downloadable.
Amazing photos! Especially the the with the man who shot the pope. The man looks like he has respect for the pope. For the Pope to be able to forgive him, hopefully changed his life. I pray. AWESOME pics. TY.
so interesting images that I’ve never seen before.GOOD JOB
wow! that was the first time I seen those photos especially my uncles favorite band the Beatles, they’re absolutely handsome. Great collections.
Mind blowing picture | I AM LOVING IT
Very interesting photos – except for the stuff including the Beatles and other pop singers: why is such dross considered historic?
When you think of the contribution to humanity of such as Albert Einstein, it puts these pathetic pygmies and their dreary “music” into true perspective.
Very nice historic pictures
my kids refuse 2 believe that these were the first computers. They think this is a painting of the tiatanic (after it sunk). They were fascinated with the coca cola bottles. I think these photos were very educational and insightful. A nice history lesson.
Wow, it makes you realize how much growth that the brand have. Really love the Brand evolution photos. Thank u for putting it together.
the last one is a lie,, he was one of those who arranged this.
The photo in the hospital is from an ad campaign. It never truly happened. Perhaps it should have been mentioned as the other pics are most probably real.
Love seeing the King there, even if he does look somber.
The Bush one is kinda eerie!
Awesome photos, thanks!
The churchman in the photo with Hitler IS NOT PIUS XII, but ORSENIGO!!
Correct it!
nice capturings
Wow, some rare photo’s of interesting people, events and some questionable photos of the same!
Make’s you wonder, The why,what,when where,and who?
Ech, i thinked that Che Guevara and Fidel Castro was in those first MCDonald ;p
The Lennon/Chapman pic was not taken on the day he died, it was taken some days before.
pretty sure that’s Obama with his family not Osama
Really itz great history photos.
I enjoyed the pix, but REALLY enjoyed the comments….omg, too funny!
i dunno if anyone has mentioned it already, but the photo of John Lennon shortly before his death also has his murderer in it.
Not to say that it would be impossible to get a picture like this, it’s just in this case that the image is actually a painting.
